GA-SEN: Jim Martin to face Saxby Chambliss After Landslide Runoff Victory! (with poll)

Wed Aug 06, 2008 at 04:25:14 AM PDT

Jim Martin 3

Atlanta attorney Jim Martin had much to celebrate last night at Piedmont Park's Park Tavern as he, his family, and campaign team savored a landslide victory rout over DeKalb County Executive Vernon Jones.

Atlanta's WSB-TV is reporting this morning that Martin garnered 190000+ votes to win 60/40 over Jones with 99% of precints reporting. WSB election results data can be found here.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitition:

.Turnout was light in the race for the Democratic Party nomination for the U.S. Senate seat held by incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss.

Only 18 percent of registered voters cast ballots in the primary, and fewer than half of those were expected to return to the polls Tuesday for 12 hours of voting that began at 7 a.m.

Ga Sen: Urgent Tuesday Runoff Reminder-Support Jim Martin for US Senate (with poll)

Mon Aug 04, 2008 at 02:33:28 PM PDT

Jim Martin 3

This is a reminder for all Georgia Kossacks: don't forget to vote for Jim Martin tomorrow in the Democratic Senate Primary runoff against Vernon Jones. Jones, a Democrat-in-name-only who proudly brags that he voted for George W. Bush in both 2000 and 2004, has neither the statewide name recognition, the ability to raise funds, nor the personal character to defeat Saxby Chambliss next fall.

Jim Martin is a person of tremendous intelligence, decency and integrity. He served for nearly two decades in the Georgia House of Representatives, including chairing the House Judiciary Committee; and ran a strong, though unsuccessful, campaign for Lieutenant Governor in 2006, where he garnered 75000 more votes than Dem Gubernatorial candidate Mark Taylor.

GA-Sen: New Poll Gives Jim Martin Strong Primary Lead (with poll)

Fri Jul 11, 2008 at 11:38:19 AM PDT

Jim Martin

Atlanta's WSB-TV has reported that a new Insider Advantage poll shows former state representative and Lt. Governor candidate Jim Martin gaining significant strength with an 11 point lead over his nearest competitor, DeKalb County Executive Vernon Jones, in the five person race to challenge Republican horse's ass Saxby Chambliss.

Martin now leads Jones 31-20, with the other three challengers in singls digits. Still, approximately one third of GA Voters remain undecided. The entire story is here.

These numbers indicate a likely runoff between Martin and Jones. Jones, with a history of alleged sexual misconduct in office, recently earned a barrage of negative publicity for publishing a campaign photo of himself and Barack Obama. The photo was a photo-shopped fake that implied Obama supported Jones. Obama has made no endorsements in the GA-Sen primary race.

GA SEN: Martin Campaign Off to Solid Start in Fundraising

Sat Apr 05, 2008 at 03:08:34 PM PDT

Jim Martin

Former state representative and Lt. Governor candidate Jim Martin announced yesterday that his fledgling  primary campaign exceeded its fundraising goal of $250,000 by raising $346,000 in less that 12 days.

Martin is a solid progressive who faces five other opponents in the June 15 Democratic primary, none of which have the statewide name recognition or fundraising capabilities Martin so well demonstrated in his Lt. Governor campaign versus right wing Republican Casey Cagle. Martin earned 75,000 more votes in the Lt.Gov. race than Dem gubernatorial candidate Mark Taylor in his race against Sonny "Pray for Rain" Perdue.

Martin joins the race with top contender Vernon Jones, DeKalb County CEO,and four other potential candidates: Ecologist Rand Knight, Statesboro's Josh Lanier, former WSB talking head Dale Cardwell, and Rockdale County School Board member Maggie Martinez.

Breaking:GA Sen-Viable Challenger to Saxby Chambliss-Jim Martin Announces Candidacy (with poll)

Wed Mar 19, 2008 at 01:10:38 PM PDT

I have always been reluctant to use the word "breaking", but this is big news for Georgia. Finally! An extraordinarily capable and viable challenger to Saxby Chambliss has emerged.

Atlanta Attorney Jim Martin, a well-known and beloved state legislator and solid progressive announced this afternoon that he will challenge Bushbot wingnut GA Sen. Saxby Chambliss.

In his announcement today Martin said:

"Today, on the fifth anniversary of the Iraq War, it’s clear that the current administration is on the wrong track. We need a Senator in Washington who answers to Georgians and not to George Bush and Dick Cheney 92 percent of the time,"

"Senator Chambliss’s uncritical advocacy of the Iraq war has been matched only by his disregard for the soldiers fighting it and their families. I believe we should respect our troops by using them more effectively and taking better care of them when they come home."

Coulter Website Advertisers: Round III

Sun Nov 04, 2007 at 02:04:33 PM PDT

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Welcome to Round III of the AnnCoulter.com advertiser awareness effort. For those who are new to DKos, a bit of history can be found here.

This past February, following journalist entertainer Ann Coulter's bigoted remarks directed toward John Edwards, the members of this site participated in a major effort to make corporate and organizational entities aware of their advertising presence on her website. The effort was very successful and all advertisers eventually pulled their ads. A repeat effort was undertaken when a few new advertisers appeared, and eventually those  disappeared with the exception of a few "junk" ads.

It is particularly astonishing that any advertiser, large or small, would even consider sponsoring this site especially after Coulter's latest round of highly publicized anti-semitic rhetoric. After months with no significant advertising support, however, the site now has a new sponsor.

There's No Difference Between Democrats and Republicans

Fri Jul 13, 2007 at 02:31:31 PM PDT

How often have you heard the refrain in this diary title from a friend or acquaintance that the Democratic and Republican parties are indistinguishable, that they are "all the same"?

While this Naderesque view is a meme oft-repeated by the politically uninformed, sadly a significant number of US citizens do have this perspective, and it's no more evident than in the abysmal voter turnout performance that plagues this nation election after election.

Even despite the abject corruption, incompetence and world-image devastation the Bush-Cheney administration has wrought upon this wonderful country, many citizens remain ambivalent about politics, perhaps the result of either lack of intellectual curiousity or just a malaise-like disgust reflected in a "one-person-can't-make-a-difference" attitude.

How many people do you know like this?

GA-Sen: Populist Firebrand Orr Mulling Race-Sign The Draft Petition (with Poll)

Sat Jun 23, 2007 at 01:59:10 PM PDT

Well-known Georgia populist firebrand and former state legistlator Wycliffe "Wyc" Orr is seriously considering a run against the incompetent and disgraceful Bush rubber stamp, Saxby Chambliss.

Orr, a north Georgia trial lawyer and military veteran, is well-respected throughout the state and is acknowledged as one of the best stump speakers among all Georgia politicians. A group of activist Georgia Democrats, concerned about the various weaknesses of the current 3 declared candidates, is strongly urging Wyc to run and has launched a "Draft Wyc" organization to support his candidacy.

A Woman's Place Is In The Home (with poll)

Mon Jun 18, 2007 at 02:01:06 PM PDT

According to guest columnist Robert Parham in today's Atlanta Journal Constitution, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary President Paige Patterson has announced that the school has begun offering classes to wives of soon-to-be pastors to "train women how to make a Christian home". Evidently this curriculum, offered at more than just this one Baptist seminary, is designed to "teach" women such skills as general homemaking, kitchen organizing, how to keep a day planner, sewing, etc. In other words ladies, the message is clear: stay at home and be subservient to your husbands.

GA-Sen: Wingnut Dem to Challenge Chambliss. A Story for Ripley's "Believe It or Not" (with poll)

Tue Jun 05, 2007 at 02:02:09 PM PDT

Dale Cardwell, Emmy Award winning investigative reporter for Atlanta's WSB-TV, has announced he is leaving his post to challenge Saxby Chambliss in 2008. Although this story was previously diaried here, a closer look at Cardwell's positions on multiple issues published since the announcement merit considerable further discussion, and this is an understatement.

Here's an excerpt from the initial announcement story
in last Saturday's Atlanta Journal Constitution (link to entire story is here):

Cardwell  says he will run against what he calls the daily, debilitating corruption of Washington, and promises to eschew money from special interest groups and political action committees.

Sound good? Have Georgia Dems found the perfect populist candidate along the lines of Alabama's exciting Ron Sparks? Not quite. Bring your barf bag and read more on the flip:
